A sterling silver pocket lighter with a ribbed finish made by the best known luxury retailer of smoking accessories; Dunhill. Alfred Dunhill took over his father's saddlery business in London,Henry's, and turned it into one of the finest destinations for accessories for the modern gentleman. Initially developing a unique line of motoring accessories, because this mode of transport was rapidly developing, he later went on to make pipes, lighters and anything else the modern gentleman traveller would need.
This is a butane lighter, for which the gas is still available to purchase. The lighter is in exceptional condition. Made in Paris, France, where Dunhill went on to make a number of their finer grade lighters attributed to the 'Guillon' workshop. The model was introduced into the Dunhill line as early as 1952. This particular piece dates circa 1975, as this example was imported into London, England, and so has the dated full import assay hallmarks on the base, as can be seen in the photograph. this piece is perhaps one of the finest quality pocket lighters made during the mid-century. They are quite rare, and to find them in this condition is very rare. Note the folded hinge to the fuel cover to highlight the addition levels of quality and care taken in the making of this model.
It can me in three different sizes, with this one being the Medium size. This lighter shares the same movement as the "Alduna" model, which is a wider version, and launched a little earlier, in 1949. This model only came in precious metal, but came in a few different finishes. This diagonal ribbed or striped version being particularly handsome. The condition of the piece is superb throughout. Made in Paris, circa 1975.
